What really annoys me are the ones who write to say, I am doing your book for my final examinations and could you please tell me what the meaning of it is. I find it just so staggering--that you're supposed to explain the meaning of your book to some total stranger! If I knew what the meanings of my books were, I wouldn't have bothered to write them. Margaret Drabble
About This Quote

When I am writing a book, my aim is to write a book that my readers can understand and enjoy. This is why I write books that are easy to understand and they are not very long. If someone writes to me asking for my meaning of a certain passage, I feel like I am being asked to explain my own work. I assume that the person has read the book and is simply asking for help with one or two lines of text.  I think it is a bit rude for someone to ask someone else to explain the meaning of something they have just read.
